When we think about Hong Kong food, people typically think of dim sum and siu mei, but often forget that Cantonese curry is also one of the iconic dishes. When I was looking for the best restaurants in Wan Chai, my cousin who lives in Hong King told me that I MUST try the pork chop curry rice and beef chow fun at Sun King Yuen Curry Restaurant. Even her husband bounced up in excitement when she brought it up.
Of course I had to try it, plus, it's quite close to the hotel I was staying at.
Best Restaurants in Wan Chai—Sun King Yuen: Take-out
Sun King Yuen Wan Chai is very popular among the locals, and their impressive proportions also makes their food quite Instagram-worthy.
There's typically a line especially during lunch and dinner hours, for both take-out and dine-in. Lining towards the left of the store is the take out line. I saw a lot of office workers come for lunch take-out. From 11:30–15:00 there are discount food boxes at only HKD$55 dollars each. Making it one of the best cheap eats in Hong Kong.
Lining towards the right is for dine-in. I came on a Thursday evening around dinner time, and I stayed in line for around 20 minutes. My cousin said that it's usually not such a long wait.
Best Restaurants in Wan Chai—Sun King Yuen: Menu
There's a minimum spend of HKD$80 per person at Sun King Yuen Curry Restaurant.
Sun King Yuen's menu is only written in Mandarin on the walls, so a brief recap: They have curry chicken, pork, beef, fish, seafood, and veggie rice, all at HKD$96. Beef chow fun and most other rice dishes are HKD$88. You really should be ordering the pork chop curry rice anyway.
Best Restaurants in Wan Chai—Sun King Yuen: Pork Chop Curry Rice
I initially thought that my cousin recommended the Pork Chop Curry Rice (HKD$96) because of the sauce and considered getting the beef brisket curry since I typically prefer beef over pork. But I am SO glad I listened to her!
The pork chop was downright astonishing. It's so huge that they had to stack a second layer on the big plate and it's super thick. They also offer generous proportions of rice, which filled the bottom layer of the plate in a heap. The curry sauce is served in a separate bowl with a large chunk of potato in it. It really provides quite great value and is definitely one of the best restaurants in Wan Chai. There's so much food I feel that one would be enough for two people, but keep in mind the HKD80 minimum spend.
When the food arrived, it was still piping hot which makes it extra enjoyable. The curry sauce is slightly spicy which makes you want to gobble it down with rice. The pork chop tastes great with or without dipping it in curry sauce. It is super tender with slivers of tendon distributed evenly within, giving it a nice bouncy texture. It also doesn't have the fibery mouth feel that a lot of pork chop has. It's very juicy, especially the even thicker parts near the bones, I felt like savory juice was exploding in my mouth as I bit down.
During dinner hours, you can also order pork chop à la carte, but what you see in my photos is just one serving of pork chop curry rice. I wish I was able to eat more!

Best Restaurants in Wan Chai—Sun King Yuen: Beef Chow Fun
There is a sign on the outside of Sun King Yuen that reads "Pork Chop Curry Rice" and " Beef Chow Fun" which are the two signature dishes and most popular Wan Chai restaurant dinners. Plus, beef chow fun is a classic Cantonese dish of stir-fried (chow) thick rice noodles (ho fun) with beef.
The Beef Chow Fun (HKD$88) contained large pieces of beef that are quite thick for beef slices. It's extremely soft and tender with no sign of drying or being overcooked. Unlike most sad little sprinkles of beef I often get with similar dishes. It's also quite a large serving. The rice noodles are cooked perfectly, which makes them bouncy and flavorful, having sucked up all the delicious sauce. Another notable thing is that the rice noodles did not stick together at all. The only slight draw back is that this dish is a bit on the oily side, but it didn't feel too greasy either. I mean, if you don't use enough oil for this dish, the rice noodles could easily turn into lumps, so it's not really a bad thing. But in comparison, I would still recommend the pork chop curry rice.
